Some information on Gold History, Gold Refining and Gold Recycling

Gold and gold refining has captured the attention and fascination of civilizations for thousands of years. Gold has been found in jewelry and art dating back to 4,000 B.C. I am sure that even primitive man had some early relationship with the metal in its natural and unrefined state. I bet the earliest traders would sell gold or buy gold as form of barter. Even as it appeared naturally in areas that were exposed to the surface, such as rivers or riverbeds, the luster, color, and feel made gold an attractive possession. The nuggets that were found in rivers generally would be 75% gold mixed with other elements. Because of the tumbling action in the water, those nuggets became polished and had a beautiful shine. Perhaps it was that characteristic that created the obsession that mankind developed for this precious metal, Gold.

This fascination has created the use of the metal in a multitude of ways:

  • Besides gold’s beautiful appearance and luster, it also was very easy to shape, and quite malleable. These characteristics combined to make gold perfect for jewelry. Egyptian, Minoan, Assyrian, Sumerian, Etruscan, Greek, Turkish, Roman and just about every modern day civilization has crafted jewelry and other decorative objects out of gold.
  •  Gold is rare, and therefore has a high value. This, and the acceptance of the metal world wide, was the basis for governments backing their treasuries currency with gold reserves. Today, governments buy gold and sell gold to balance their treasuries.
  • Gold’s other characteristics such as its high corrosion resistance, and high conductivity make it an attractive metal in the use of electronic components, terminals, and wires. This industry alone consumes huge amounts of gold, nearly equaling the usage for jewelry. This has created a large amount of gold scrap and created an industry of gold recycling.
  • Markets have been created worldwide to deal with gold and the tremendous demand for the metal. Electronic trading not comprises the majority of the transactions for gold.
  • Because of gold’s high value for a small quantity, and the general acceptance of gold everywhere, it has also become a personal investment and offers portable wealth. When someone was in need, gold could be traded for cash, or as we now refer to it, cash for gold!

It is because of the above factors that the need for present day gold refiners has increased so dramatically in the last few decades. It was out of this need, for gold recycling, that our company started gold refining. It is our goal, and part of our mission statement that we offer these services to everyone. We have developed a modern gold refining and gold recycling facility. Over the years, we have developed methods of limiting the working losses and protecting our environment at the same time. We want you to know that we take every precaution to both maximize your return while minimizing the impact on our environment. No matter whether you sell gold to us, or just use us as a gold refiner or gold recycling, we care about our environment.

Refining requires a great deal of chemistry. There are a few ways to produce fine gold that are used commercially. The Miller process uses gases and can produce gold with a purity of 99.95%. Another method, the Wohlwill process can produce gold with a purity of 99.99%.

Another method of gold refining is the use of Aqua Regia. This method is commonly used to refine gold from jewelry that contains precious and semiprecious stones. The process actually dissolves all of the metal into a solution and leaves most types of stones sitting in the bottom, ready for removal. Then the solution is treated with a chemical that extracts the fine gold as a powder. Other metals too will be extracted later. This method is commonly used for stone removal and to refine small amounts of gold scrap.

Once the fine gold is ready, it is then processed. Either it will made into bars or small shots, which are little pebbles of gold. Most investors prefer the bars, as they are marked with the purity and weight. It is easier to sell gold in the form of bars. Most jewelers prefer shot, as it is easier to handle and weigh for use in alloying, casting, etc.
Today, many industries produce gold waste. Imagine referring to gold scrap as a waste material. Jewelry factories commonly burn their carpets and floor sweeps. The send this material to a gold refining or gold recycling facility such as Goldlords. We have many such customers. If our customers may want to buy gold from us as well, as we are a supplier of fine gold. Many of our customers just request cash for gold, and we settle in the appropriate manner.
